WHAT WOULD LEAD TO A HEART ATTACK? |
| |
| |
There are three special arteries called coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. A critical block in these coronary arteries, can lead to a heart attack. |
| |
| |
WHY IS BYPASS SURGERY REQUIRED? |
| |
| |
Patients with significant blocks in their coronary arteries need bypass surgery. The blocks are bypassed by using a new route of blood supply to the heart, to ensure that all parts of the heart start receiving normal blood flow and you can go back to your full activity. |
| |
| |
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BYPASS SURGERY? |
| |
| |
In bypass surgery, spare tubes (grafts) from other parts of the body are taken out and put on the heart to be used to provide blood flow to the blocked coronary arteries of the heart. These are called ‘by passes’. |
| |
| |
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SPARE TUBES (GRAFTS) THAT CAN BE USED FOR BYPASS? |
| |
| |
Grafts used in bypass surgery are of two types:- |
| |
Arterial Grafts |
| |
Vein Grafts |
| |
| |
WHAT ARE VEIN GRAFTS? |
| |
| |
Vein grafts are taken from the left and right lower limbs. These are called saphenous vein grafts. Vein grafts have a shorter life. |
| |
| |
WHAT ARE ARTERIAL GRAFTS? |
| |
| |
Arterial grafts are taken from the: |
| |
| Chest |
- |
These are called internal mammary artery grafts-left and right. They are also called LIMA & RIMA |
| |
| Forearms |
- |
These are called radial artery grafts – Left and right. |
| |
| |
| |
HOW DO ARTERIAL GRAFTS BENEFIT A PERSON? |
| |
| |
Arterial grafts have a life longer than the vein grafts and tend to work for a longer time. Thus the patient may get long lasting benefits of bypass surgery as compared to vein grafts.
International studies have shown that arterial grafts like internal mammary arteries are working in 90% patients even after 20 years while, in case of vein grafts, they may be working in 50% cases after 10 years of surgery. |

WHAT IS TOTAL ARTERIAL REVASCULARISATION? |
| |
| |
A BYPASS SURGERY WHERE ONLY ARTERIAL GRAFTS ARE USED (WITHOUT USING ANY VEIN GRAFTS), IS CALLED TOTAL ARTERIAL REVASCULARISATION. THIS SURGERY SHOULD PROVIDE THE BEST AND LONGEST LASTING BENEFITS TO THE PATIENTS. TOTAL ARTERIAL REVASCULARISATION IS THE GOLD STANDARD IN BYPASS SURGERY AND GIVES THE BEST RESULTS. DR. BHATNAGAR’S BEATING HEART CLINIC SPECIALIZES IN TOTAL ARTERIAL REVASCULARIZATION. |
